THE BRAZILIAN CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN 2009

Net sales for the Brazilian chemical industry, in 2009, according to preliminary information, taking into account all segments that comprise it, reached R$ 206.7 billions, 7.0% below 2008. Measured in US dollars, net sales achieved record US$ 103.3 billions, 15.5% below the value for the previous year. Due to the international crisis that brought down the worldwide demand and pulled prices down, exports to the Brazilian chemical industry fell 12.2% in 2009, reaching the amount of US$ 10.4 billion. Imports had greater reduction (-25.5%) to $ 26.1 billion. The imports had greater reduction (-25.5%) to $ 26.1 billion. Through this, the deficit in chemicals trade balance fell from US$ 23.20 billion in 2008 to US$ 15.7 billion in 2009. Brazil's GDP in 2009 closed with a drop of 0.2%.

The chemical industry actively participates in almost all the chains and complexes, including services and agriculture performing a significant role in the development of several economic activities in the Country. According to data recently revised by the IBGE, the contribution of the chemical industry in total GDP was 2.6% in 2009 (estimated value). Taking into account all Brazilian industrial matrix, the chemical sector occupied in 2007, last available data, the third position, accounting for about 11.2% of GDP in manufacturing, according to IBGE.

The relative importance of the chemical industry in the composition of the Brazilian GDP is determined by the concept of additional value (or aggregate value), which is close to the following (according to 2009 data): (US$ 103.3 billion x 0.40)/US$ 1,577.26 billion = 2.6% of the GDP. Data revised in accordance with current GDP figures. *Estimated.

Industrial chemicals, with net sales of R$ 96.6 billion, representing US$ 48.3 billion, answered for 47% of the total chemical industry net sales for 2009. The pharmaceutical products segment, with sales of R$ 33.4 billion (or US$ 15.9 billion), was responsible for 15%. The remaining segments together represent 38% of the total.
